Whiplash Wednesday

Winterfylleth Album The Threnody of Triumph

What better way to celebrate being halfway through the week than a good dose of head-banging. We all need a bit of a boost on a Wednesday, so every so often i’ll be seeking out the best new metal albums, ’cause let’s face it, no one else is going to do it!

This week’s choice is Winterfylleth – The Threnody of Triumph (Candlelight, 2012)

This British black metal band have been around since 2008 when they released their debut through Profound Lore, and have since become a staple part of the British metal scene alongside veterans, Venom.

Winterfylleth describe their sounds as ‘English Heritage Black Metal’, but while their take on the black metal genre is as brutal and cold as their Norwegian counterparts, they’re not afraid to incorporate some folk elements with a post-rock focus. There is definitely an English feel about it and I kinda like it!

If you need convincing – just listen to the first track, ‘A Thousand Winters’. Exploding with a fury of black metal double-pedal drumming, the track opens up to expose an almost transcendent guitar part; glimmering and beautifully sustained over a half time drum section, before breaking into chaos once again. It’s sheer bliss.

So take a listen!
